{UAH} Kampala Central Police Attack: What Security Intelligence is Not telling You.
Kampala woke up on Saturday to news of an attack on the cities' most guarded address, Kampala Central Police station. Regarded as the seat of police power, assailants were able to slide past security and gained access to the armory unnoticed, at least that's Ugandans are being told.
The assailants took off with two AK47 sub-machine guns and 60 rounds, according to statement released by police. But is it the whole truth? One officer begs to differ with the official figures.
What we now know.
It is said that six police officers were guarding the station that fateful night, who are already in police custody to assist with the investigation. According our source, it was a two-fold attack with one side exploiting police night duty weakness.
Negligence
Its common practice for security guards, police inclusive, to abscond night operation and wondered off to attend to their personal issue while on duty. With that in mind, there is a high chance that the would-be-protectors of the station were dead-asleep or were not around to begin with, enabling a neat walk in and out for the assailant without raising much suspicion. The supervising officer (OC) was not around and the DPC, ASP Gwaidho Bakaleke was in the village for his wedding meetings.
Inside Job
To pull off a stunt in such a security cautious building could not have been possible unless someone from the inside directly aided the assailant. Our source tells us that the locks to the armory were not broken but opened with a key, they picked the ammunitions and walked out smartly. Do you smell something? An accomplice was directing the operation behind the scenes.
A crisis meeting on Saturday was convened by ACP Frank Mwesigwa, Kampala Metropolitan police commander, which was attended by his deputy, the CID commanders, Crime Intelligence commander, among other officer.
We were not able to get the details of what was discussed in the meeting. However, Frank Mwesigwa while addressing the press confirmed that the two guns were recovered from Iganga district and nine suspected master minders were in police custody.
"We are investigating the case, to find out the motive behind the robbery, as well as identify other accomplices," Mwesigwa said.
This article we published a week ago, highlighted the weaknesses in the police night operation uncovered when Police Conducted Surprise Mass Arrests Of Officers On-Night Duty within the City.
