Ugandans reward Ntege Shs1.3m for beating MP Simeo
Ugandans have raised Shs1.3m and handed it over to the family of William Ntege aka Kyuma Kya Yesu for successfully roughing up and blocking Kassanda South MP, Simeo Nsubuga, on Monday.
Simeo who had lined up to greet Buganda King Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, was grabbed by the angry youth, choked and thrown out of the Buwekula county Mubende district event.
Although most Ugandans praised the daring deserved feat, Ntege was consequently arrested and detained at Mubende Police Station.
Ntege was brought before the Mubende Grade One Magistrate, Hellen Ajio, and charged with inciting violence and assault.
He denied the charges. His lawyers Gawaya Tegulle and Moses Kabusu applied for bail which was denied.
Ntege had substantial sureties who included Sheik Sinan Kagwa, the FDC Chairman Mubende District.
But state prosecutors argued that Ntege has been cited several times in such unbecoming acts hence should not be given bail.
Magistrate Ajio remanded him to Kaweri prison until next Wednesday 9th August 2017.
Meanwhile, Ronald Muhinda, a journalist who works with Radio One, has been championing a campaign for the freedom of what he calls "a national hero".
On Friday, Muhinda handed Ntege's wife, Deborah Nabwami, over Shs980, 000 at Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda [HRNJ-U] offices in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb.
Muhinda said the money would support Nabwami's family and Ntege who is on remand in Mubende district "for blocking Simeo from prostrating before the Kabaka during his 24th coronation celebrations in Buwekula".
Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Bakireke Nambooze, contributed Shs200,000 through HRNJ coordinator, Robert Ssempala.
At HRNJ offices alone, Muhinda and his team were able to collect Shs170,000 for Ntege's family.
"In total, Nabwami received Shs1,350,000. She was very thankful to all Ugandans that have contributed to Ntege and his family's wellbeing," Muhinda said.
He added: "She has three kids, two of whom she says were left sick by their father. I assured her that if more money comes in, she will receive it."
Who is William Ntege aka Kyuma Kya Yesu?
Ntege, 39, is an activist, a freelance journalist formerly working with the defunct WBS television and a born again Christian.
He was among those who picked presidential nomination forms to run against President Yoweri Museveni in 2016 elections but failed to raise the Shs20m nomination fee.
In 2014, Ntege was arrested at Parliament trying to petition the Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, over police brutality.
He was produced at City Hall Court and charged with criminal trespass and being a common nuisance.
Grade One Magistrate, Elias Kakooza, sentenced him to two months in Luzira prison.
In December that year, Ntege chained himself at the fly-over connecting the South wing to Northern wing of the parliament building in a protest.
A year before, he had chained himself on a pole at the police headquarters while protesting police brutality.
