- Human rights activist Maina Kiai was detained at the JKIA briefly on Sunday, August 20

- According to word from the Director of Immigration, Kiai needed clearance before he could board the flight

- This is despite the fact that Kiai, a board member of the KHRC, is not a government official

Maina Kiai , a renown human rights activist was on Sunday morning briefly detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as he was preparing to leave the country.

TUKO.co.ke has learnt that Kiai was headed to Prague on Sunday, August 20, when he was stopped on orders by director of Immigration.

It is understood that the director demanded some forms of clearance from Kiai, despite the fact that he wasn't a government official.

Kiai, a Kenya Human Rights Commission board member was eventually released and allowed to board his flight.

His standoff at the airport comes barely days after IEBC official Roselyn Akombe was detained in similar fashion as she was preparing for a flight to the US on "official business"

There were initial reports that perhaps Akombe was fleeing the country following a contentious electoral process that has made its way to the supreme court.

IEBC and Akombe herself, through a statement however clarified that she was out on official duties, rather than fleeing the country as earlier speculated.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) , is popular for calling out vices in the country, particularly on the political front.

It was however de registered on Monday, August 14 by executive directorof the NGO board Fazul Mohammed for an alleged misappropriation of KSh 1.2 billion.
