Foreign model arrested at Hong Kong airport for smuggling in $300,000 worth of cocaine
As Victoria's Secret models were strutting (and tumbling) on the catwalk in Shanghai, another model was doing a very different sort of walk in Hong Kong.
On Monday, a 19-year-old female model from Greece was arrested at the Hong Kong airport, with a 2.6kg pack of cocaine worth HK$2.4 million ($307,000) hidden in a false compartment in her backpack. The young woman had arrived on a flight from Ethiopia and was selected for a routine inspection.
The South China Morning Post notes that this bust is the latest in a string of arrests involving women smuggling cocaine into Hong Kong. Since last Tuesday, four female visitors have been arrested by customs officers for carrying the drug. It's not yet clear if the cases are connected.
Two of the other women arrived in Hong Kong on flights from Tanzania via Ethiopia. While another 52-year-old woman carrying 2.5kg of cocaine in 180 condoms concealed inside her body came to the city on a flight from Peru via the Netherlands.
Either way, it would certainly seem that this is not the most effective method of drug smuggling. Earlier this year, smugglers were much more creative, trying to sneak cocaine into China by hiding the drug inside a shipment of frozen mackerel and by injecting it into suitcases.
