NRM: Ssekandi Can't Oust Museveni
Uganda's ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has said vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi is incapable of toppling three-decade leader Yoweri Museveni.
NRM secretariat spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa said Sunday that Ssekandi would not do to Museveni what Emmerson Mnangagwa did to Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe.
Mnangagwa replaced Mugabe days after the nonagenarian president sacked him.
"He [Ssekandi] is a very respectful man; he can't do what Mnangagwa did to Mugabe," said Mulindwa during an NBS TV show.
Ssekandi replaced Prof Gilbert Bukenya as Uganda's deputy president on May 24, 2011.
Ssekanda previously served as speaker of Uganda's parliament for a decade.
Mulindwa also praised Zimbabwe's bloodless coup because "there was no looting, blood-shedding and torture".
KIWANUKA SSEKANDI ONLY GOOD FOR FUNERALS
But Mulindwa's co-panelists on the weekend show tore apart Ssekandi.
"Our VP's authority only allows him to speak at funeral services," said opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) deputy secretary general Harold Kaija.
"No one should lie to you that there is something which can be done in this country without President Museveni being involved," added local commentator Basajja Mivule.
Indeed, Ssekandi officiated at the wedding of Ambassador James William Kinobe's wedding.
He also attended the funeral of Kwame Musoke, a son to a former Buganda Kingdom premier.
