{UAH} Red Pepper editors charged with offending Musevevi...

Folks;

I'm offended by these ridiculous charges.

None of the three public figures - Museveni, Salim Saleh, Tumukunde - stands to win a libel case. As public figures, the threshold for them to prove that the Red Pepper intentionally set out to harm their reputation, is so high as to make this case laughable.

As for the case of offending the president, I would case that's the core mission of any newspaper; to act as a necessary irritant to authorities in performance of public service.

When the Red Pepper started out about a decade ago, it was rumored  that it was owned by some Intel folks.  I think the rumor was fueled due, in part, to the temerity and frequency with which the tabloid would spread security-related stories on a regular basis.

But being arrested, and charged with libel or even treason, is a common occupational hazard to Uganda journalists: nearly all veterans - Onyango-Obbo, Wafula Oguttu, Andrew Mwenda, Chris Obore, Bichache, etc. - have seen jail cells a few times.
