Uganda: Female singer beaten at festival by police

Female singer Diana Namukwaya (popularly known as Spice Diana) was reportedly beaten by police at the Kampala City Festival on 8 October 2017. The singer said she had just finished her first of four performances at the event when police apprehended and beat her, reported The Kampala Sun.
Spice Diana could not make any of her other scheduled performances at the festival due to her injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
"The singer refused to comply with rules of security; she and her manager Lubega resisted the police check and wanted to force their way into the venue," Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Emillian Kayima told Uganda's New Vision, adding that the singer and her manager assaulted a police officer.
Police have pressed charges against the singer for assault and obstruction of an officer on duty.
