A Ugandan defense official said that the country's military is ready to deploy 5,000 troops outside of existing missions to combat al Shabaab militants in Somalia if other nations also commit resources there, All Africa reported Nov. 10. The operation in Somalia falls under the auspices of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and, although Uganda provides the largest number of troops to AMISOM, the mission also draws forces from Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly told the acting U.S. assistant secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs that Uganda would only provide additional troops to Somalia if the international community "commits to regular funding" and provisions of military equipment to fight al Shabaab.A Ugandan defense official said that the country's military is ready to deploy 5,000 troops outside of existing missions to combat al Shabaab militants in Somalia if other nations also commit resources there, All Africa reported Nov. 10.
