{UAH} VETERAN JOURNALIST DEAD!
ONE OF THE REMAINING INDEPENDENCE VETERANS PASSES ON
Veteran nationalist and journalist, Mzee Ashe James Ssekaggya passed
on yesterday.
He was one of the few surviving nationalists that fought for our
national independence.
He was a youth winger in Uganda National Congress, side by side with
the late John Ssebaana Kizito.
He used to collect and disseminate information within the UNC's structure.
He was also a journalist that worked with newspapers of the day.
He last worked with Tafa Empya before it collapsed in 1991
He was founder of Conservative Party and Labor Party.
He was also the founder of Ssekabaka Muteesa l Foundation, whivh had a
dream of starting Muteesa l Royal University.
He was the brain behind the statue of Kawalya Kaggwa along Kampala
Road, in memory of his idea of bringing Hydro Electricity.
He has been a writer and of late he has been occasionally writing in Bukedde.
His last appearance in a studios was in Dream TV .
He was awarded a national independence medal.
He was a sportsperson and at one time, he launched Muammar El Qadaffi
sports club but it did not went far.
He was a factor in my journalism career. I had initially started with
Economy Publications, under Maj. Roland Kakooza Mutale, the publishers
of Economy and Mulengera newspapers. But things were not all well, so
my grand, the late Sheikh Zaid Kateregga Mugenyasooka, who was his
friend, requested him to take me to Taifa. But Taifa also had its own
problems. So he took me to Kezekia Sseggwanga Musisi, General Manager
of Shield Publications, who used to publish Ngabo and the Star
newspapers, and l joined them in October 1990.
May the Almighty God reward him accordingly.
