{UAH} Fwd: Fw: Driverless Delivery Robot
Frank Mujabi/ Gwokto/Annet,
Here is a Driverless Delivery Robot at work- I took this picture on the weekend in Lewisham, South London. I needed to see to believe. Now I believe Driverless cars are just a few months away- may be in two years they will be on the roads.
This particular robot was delivering take-away pizzas for PizzaHut. It was being tested in Lewisham, so it had a technician following it to and fro. It is completely robotic, and is controlled from its digital source. Once programmed, it travels to its destination and delivers the pizza. It has sensors, so it can locomote on the pedestrian pavement, together with humans. It can stop or swerve to avoid humans, and can cross roads at traffic junctions or even where there are no junctions. Its sensors tell it when it is safe to cross the road. On arrival, the controller phones the customer, and then opens the robot for the pizza to be collected, and job done, and the robot is back on the move to make another delivery. It is fitted with cameras so its activities are monitored throughout its journey.
Truly amazing. Obviously there are still other bottlenecks they will have to overcome, eg potholes, flooded streets, and obviously vandals and ruggamuffians, of whom there are many in some parts of London!!!
So what is the future of work when these robots are fully operational? At a stroke most of the delivery drivers who use cars and motorcycles will be put out of business. The fate that befell the banks, when the computers took over the work of the bank tellers and clerks will soon descend on the food industry it would seem.
And Annet, how soon do we expect to see the Delivery Robot making an appearance on the Kampala streets? Fat Chance obviously if the pot-bellied outlaw Kayibanda is still in situ!!!!
