Khama steps down happy
President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama says he is stepping down at the end of his term in office a happy man, and that he has learnt a lot from Batswana.
Addressing residents of Bokspits, Rapalspan, Vaalhoek and Struizendam, President Khama said he learnt about the diverse culture of different tribes. "That is why I decided to promote culture including polka music which is predominantly enjoyed in the area," he said.
The four villages are known as BORAVAST, and is an acronym for Bokspits, Rapalspan, Vaalhoek and Struizendam.President Khama said amongst the things that he learnt was the diverse culture evident in different tribes.
He added that the idea of constituency tournaments emanated from Bokspits. He added that during one of his visits to the village some youth complained that the Botswana Football Association (BFA) did not recognise them because they were far from the cities. President Khama told the multitudes who came to bid him farewell that they should be proud of their constituency because it had unique features such as sand dunes that made it to be known worldwide.
He said it was for that reason that the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development would introduce a desert park to promote tourism in the area. "I assure you that I will continue visiting you after I have vacated office because I am the patron of arts and culture and champion of Vision 2036," he said.
Welcoming President Khama, Kgosi Emma Morerwa of Bokspits commended him for having resuscitated culture during his tenure. She said President Khama also ensured that communities which were perceived to be in remote areas got services.
Kgosi Morerwa also noted that President Khama had cordial relations with other nations and that he encouraged peace. She added that Botswana was envied by many countries.
She also pleaded with President Khama to ensure that different programmes he introduced during his tenure were continued, adding that they alleviated many people from poverty. Kgosi Morerwa also said the BORAVAST area still lacked portable water, and also decried the bad state of the road that linked Bokspits and Struizendam and the transfrontier park.
President Khama assured residents that their problem of lack of portable water would be solved, saying Water Utilities Corporation was working round the clock to connect the other borehole to the treatment plant. BOPA
