{UAH} Leaders walkout on minister Butime over age limit

Local government leaders on Tuesday walked out on Minister for Local Government Tom Butime and threatened to have their representatives impeached for luring them into supporting the age limit bill.

The ugly episode happened at Ntare School in Mbarara town where the leaders had gathered for Uganda Local Governments' Authorities (ULGA) meeting.

What surprised the leaders was Butime asking them to support the removal of the age limit clause instead of discussing issues pertaining the municipality.

Mbarara district LC5 Chairman Capt. JB Bamuturaki, told the minister that ULGA was behind him and that he should go ahead and amend the constitution.

ULGA President George Mutabazi was of the same mind, adding his voice to that of Bamuturaki.

The remarks were received with a hot verbal exchange as members stood up, pointing fingers, waving clinched fists and threatening to teach their colleagues a lesson.

As the hubbub increased, those who could not tolerate the situation any longer, just walked out of the meeting.

Bernard Eumu, the district chairperson Ngora, accused Mutabazi and Bamuturaki of dragging a non-partisan association into political gimmicks.

George Opio, the district speaker Lira, moved for the impeachment of ULGA president Mutabazi or else members quit the association once and for all.

But Bamuturaki defended himself saying supporting the age limit amendment is no crime since he cannot dissociate himself from politics.

Mutabazi too was determined asking those threatening impeachment to go ahead since he was just supporting a view raised by a member.
