President Museven's former minister for agriculture, Hope Mwesigye says Mr. Museveni decission could lead to chaos and bloodshed. Her comments come days after president Museveni signed into law the Constitution Amendment Act 2017- commonly known as age limit.
Mwesigye says that Museveni's decision to sign age limit bill into law has left many Ugandans angry adding that this anger may result into bloodshed. Mwesigye says, President Museveni action, means Uganda is set for life presidency. The former minister said at a function in Rukiga district. Mwesigye said Museveni should have respected appeals from the majority of Ugandans.A survey conducted by civil society organizations indicated that 85 per cent of Ugandans did not support the proposal to lift caps on the presidential age. The study, titled: 'Citizen's Perceptions on the Proposed Amendment of Article 102(b) of the Constitution' was commissioned by Citizens Coalition on Electoral Democracy (CEEDU) and Uganda Governance Monitoring Platform (UGMP). It sampled 50,429 citizens in 80 constituencies across the country. It covered 22,926 females and 27,503 male respondents.
It should be remembered that Hope Mwesigye then a minister, key supporter of NRM party was at the centre of efforts to remove the term limits in 2005. Together with former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, [then President Museveni most trusted and super Minister], Mwesigye was the face of the term limits removal.
In his year new 2018 message, president likened the NRM MPs who voted yes to age limit to MPs of 7th Parliament who removed term lift.
