Finding her best friend naked and in the arms of my father, my mother's hopes and illusions of a monogamous spouse were crashed. She caught the two naked adulterers deep asleep in the marital bed she shared with my father. Aunt Linna's bare arse and fine thighs were partly uncovered. My parents' bedroom must have stank of a mixture of guilty sperms swimming in a philanderer's semen and the shameless squirt of a vixen that snatches her friends' husbands.
She rubbed her pregnant belly as she silently continued to stare at the evidence of infidelity enacted in her bed. And then she tiptoed to the door with her dust-covered travel bag in her hands. Although she had eagerly returned home on the Akamba Bus from a cross-border trip two days earlier than expected, she realised that there was no longer space for her in my father's bedroom. Standing outside her marital bedroom door for the very last time, my mother gently turned the key and locked the two lovers inside their chamber of vice.
She prayed to God for strength, speed and security. She went downstairs to the pantry. She grabbed hold of an iron rod. And then without a single word, she proceeded to smash every piece of breakable furniture, furnishings, fixtures, crockery and decor in the home that she jointly built in exile with my father. One loud crash followed another and another for hours that late night. When she was done with the contents of the interior of the house, she went to the garage and smashed all the glass in the two cars that our family owned.
Two weeks later, my mother returned to Uganda on the Akamba Bus with me and my two younger sisters. Her last borne child was safely tucked inside her belly. That was June 1984.
