Gitmo 2 Already Married In Ghana

Foreign minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey says two former terror suspects currently in Ghana have married in Ghana after they were brought from the US in 2016.

"Both of them have married..but no not to Ghanaians," she said, hinting the two brides were brought in from other countries.

The Yemenis, Khalid Mohammed Salih al-Dhuby and Mahmmoud Omar Mohammed Bin Atef were to stay in Ghana for two years after which the government was to take a decision on their further stay.

Ghanaians were under the impression, Ghana government is free to return them to the US government if it was not satisfied with their conduct while in Ghana.

But it has emerged, the US has no obligation to accept them when their stay expired January 6, 2018.

The Yemenis cannot be returned to Yemen as there is no government in that country to negotiate with the Ghana government, the minister told journalists after breaking the news of their continued stay in Ghana.

She said the NDC government which received them in January 2016 later granted them refugee status in July 2016. It means they are to be protected from any fear that repatriation could endanger their lives.

Ayorkor Botchwey said the government's "hands are tied" and face a difficult situation in terms of finding another country that may be interested in keeping them.

She, however, stated their upkeep is not the responsibility of her ministry.
