{UAH} LAND PROBE: 80 year old Asian-Uganda man accused of trying to grab land from a family in Mbale
On the 14th of December 2017, Robinah Matanda, a daughter of the late John Matanda, who was the deputy mayor of Mbale municipality in the 1980's broke down before the commission of inquiry into land matters chaired by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire.
Robinah and her family had petitioned the commission seeking its help in restraining Two businessmen Parima Patel and Praful Patel who had allegedly connived with a businessman in Mbale Mansa Musa to effect a court order evicting them from a building in Mbale.
The order issued by Mbale High Court was to evict the family from a building on plot 11 Republic Street in Mbale which they claim their late father John Matanda acquired in 1969.
The 80-year old Praful Patel who claims to have bought the plot from the defunct Uganda Commercial Bank in 1985, appeared before the land inquiry commission to explain his interest in the land.
Praful Patel who allegedly owns several buildings in Mbale under the Patel Indian Family failed to present any document to justify his claim on the contested piece of land.Even after carrying a bag full of documents into the commission's session sitting, Patel could not present any document to show that he owned the land, while the Matanda family claims to have a title deed on the land.
Justice Bamugemereire dismissed Praful from the commission and asked a police detective attached to the commission to get the documents Praful claims to have.
Meanwhile, in Kween District, a UPDF warrant officer Michael Kusuro was also questioned over the ownership of 3294 acres of land in Kween district.
He allegedly owns the land alongside area MP Lawrence Mangusho who is accused of trying to grab the land from residents through a cooperative union.Kusuro is accused of plotting to grab the land from peasants and sell it to an investor. The commission was told that the duo could have connived with some officials in the Ministry of Lands.
