Two days, 23 false claims from Donald Trump — including one spectacular lie
13/15WASHINGTON—U.S. President Donald Trump did a bunch of talking last Monday and Tuesday. Which meant, naturally, that he did a bunch of lying.
Trump made 23 false claims over those busy two days, 15 of them on the three-event Tuesday alone. The subjects of his deceit ranged from the unemployment rate for Black people to the diversity visa lottery program to the impact of his new tariff on washing machines.
One of the false claims was a spectacular whopper of a lie. At a White House meeting on Tuesday, Trump accurately read out the news that GM was closing a plant in South Korea — then ad-libbed that the company was "going to move back to Detroit … moving back from Korea to Detroit."
No such move is happening.
The GM announcement from which Trump appeared to be reading mentioned nothing about a move to Detroit, and a GM spokesperson, Patrick Morrissey, confirmed to the Star that the company had no plans to move any jobs or production from the Korea facility to any facility anywhere in the U.S.
Trump added 11 additional false claims over the other five days of last week. He is now up to 1,175 false claims for the first 395 days of his presidency, an average of 3.0 per day.
If Trump is a serial liar, why call this a list of "false claims," not lies? The answer is that we can't be sure that each and every one was intentional. In some cases, he may have been confused or ignorant. What we know, objectively, is that he was not telling the truth
