{UAH} Black Panther.

BY KHALED BEYDOUN

I'm yet to see Black Panther. But because of the overwhelming energy and excitement around it (despite being disinterested in comics), I'm super anxious to see this landmark film.

I've also read about accounts of the film having Islamophobic themes. Some from people I respect. Which, in addition to the deeply political spirit of the film centering Blackness, also push me to want to see the film.

Some people, mainly non-Black Muslims, have called elements of the film Islamophobic. Some have chosen to boycott the film based on what they interpret as Islamophobic themes, tropes or images. Again, I haven't seen the film yet, but would offer these insights.

First - condemning a film that has an (almost) entirely Black cast, that is directed by a Black man, and built around radical revolutionary themes prioritizes a discrete set of concerns over the transformative pro-Black and racial justice work this film has already accomplished. Boycotting this film, based on what seem to be an arguable set of Islamophobic ideas or themes, dismisses or doesn't see the considerable work the film does against White Supremacy - the source that enables both anti-Black racism and Islamophobia. Plus, boycotting such an important film (and political intervention) is idiotic.

Second - Islamophobia perpetuated by communities (or artists) of color should be grappled with differently then when unleashed by whites. Much like racism, subjects of color participating in Islamophobia are typically doing so from a position of marginality, not power. Ryan Coogler, like anybody living in America (particularly non-Muslims), is conditioned by the same negative stereotypes of Islam and Muslims as anybody else. Islamophobia and its predecessor are ubiquitous - particularly in Hollywood studios and board meetings. But, given his robust commitment to social justice as a filmmaker (see 'Fruitvale Station'), missteps (if he in fact made any) should be viewed as an opportunity to build and dialogue with, not boycott and condemn.

Third - we shouldn't be suprised when Islamophobia is present in progressive projects, whether it be by institutions, individual actors, or films. Islamophobia penetrates every sector of society, and every strata of the political spectrum. And is especially potent in Hollywood.

Fourth - we should be intelligent and honest when we brand something 'Islamophobic.' I've noticed a growing and concerning tendency to use the indictment too casually and unsuitably, which takes away from its force when used in appropriate contexts. There might be items that are questionable or arguable that don't rise to the level of Islamophobia. We should be conscious of not undermining the campaign against Islamophobia by deploying it in situations, and against actors, where it doesn't apply.

Finally - Even if the film has a questionable theme or two, why undermine and condemn an entire film that does unprecedented work? Non-Black Muslims have collectively and collaterally benefitted from civil rights and racial progress spearheaded by Black folks, yet we tend to forget about this over and again.

I'm excited to see Black Panther, and be part of the moving debates and discussions happening all over the country.
