HOW ONE CAN LEGALLY CHANGE HIS / HER NAME/NAMES IN UGANDA

Under the Oaths Act (Cap 19), The Births and Deaths Registration Act Cap 309 and the Registration of Documents Act (Cap 81), any person desirous of changing his or her names can do so
People should not be scared of changing their names if they have viable reasons. For example, a Muslim wishing to change to Christianity. It could also be for marital reasons, for example, if one wants to take on her husband's name or just wishes to change names with any given reasons.

STEPS;

1. Go to a private law firm where you will swear an affidavit/Deed poll. Sign the deed poll and have it commissioned by commissioner of OATHS.

2. Sign the statutory declaration giving the bio-data of the person place of birth, parents names, original names and the new name, stating the reasons is signed.

3. A deed poll informing the public about the change is prepared and advertised in the media and after 21-30 days, the person assumes the new name.

4. It is advisable to gazette the new name.

5. The name may then be registered with the registrar of documents.

6.The cost varies depending on the law firm one goes to.

7. Deed poll shall be given file number and forwarded to the registrar.
8. Deed poll shall be reviewed and registered by registrar.
9. Cross check with the registrar's office to pick your registered deed poll on the date you were told check.
