{UAH} OGA SAYS, "IF MY KOROKORO EYES NA DECIVE ME, I THINK I KNOW THIS MAMA"
Grace crafts PNG experience
EIGHT years of living in Papua New Guinea has proved the perfect inspiration for a Townsville visual and textile artist.
A solo exhibition of Grace Ochero's work, Inspirations from Papua New Guinea, will open at Drill Hall Studio on September 22, with a launch event at 6.30pm.
Ms Ochero, who used to lecture in textile design at the University of Papua New Guinea, said our close neighbour was "an inspiring world-renowned treasure of superb traditional arts and crafts, breathtaking people, animals, birds and fauna and artistic diversity which dramatically continues to captivate the imagination".
"During the eight years of residency in Papua New Guinea, I was amazed by the beauty and rich, colourful, superb traditional treasures and diverse tribal cultures, which inspired me greatly," she said. "This led me to work on series of selected themes and compositions showcasing my PNG cultural research and experience."
Ms Ochero started her career as a textile designer in the UK, where she won the Olympic Swimwear Print Design competition in 1980.
In the 1990s, she became an academic in Papua New Guinea, where she took part in numerous exhibitions.
