Happier days: ASP Muhammad Kirumira with musician and MP Bobi Wine

The Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, has appointed ASP Edgar Akankwasa to take over from embattled ASP Muhammad Kirumira as the new district police commander for Buyende district.

According to the police spokesman, Emilian Kayima, Akankwasa's appointment takes immediate effect.

"The other issues will be explained as and when the time comes. We want to ask the members of public not to appear so sympathetic to an officer [Kirumira] who is not complying with the code of conduct of the police," Kayima said this evening.

He added: "This should inform all of us in the force to maintain discipline because we are a disciplined force. We must play by the rules of engagement right from the constitution to the police Act and others." Kayima said.

Yesterday, Kirumira took to social media and granted various media houses interviews to announce his resignation from the police force.

This followed both criminal and disciplinary charges against him by the police tribunal.

Today, operatives of the Flying Squad Unit (FSU) swung into action to arrest Kirumira at his home in Bulenga, along Mityana road, firing bullets and teargas.

"On reaching that decision to arrest him, kirumira was engaged, even his parents were engaged but he [kirumira] proved adamant. He resisted arrest, playing [to the]  public gallery. The officers were left with no option but to use reasonable force and arrest him," said Kayima.

According to police, he was presented to the police tribunal in Naguru the same day. His bail application was rejected and he was remanded to Railway Grounds police detention centre for senior officers. He will appear before the police tribunal again on Tuesday.
