Police in Mukono has arrested a teenager in connection to theft of 50 vehicle number plates. The suspect was picked up from his hideout in a dilapidated building in Nasuuti in Mukono district.

Mukono divisional police commander Rogers Sseguya says detectives tracked down the suspect using the phone number he has been leaving behind for his victims to contact him after stealing the number plates.

According to Sseguya, after hours of interrogation, the suspect opened up and revealed that he has been stealing the number plates. He then led police to different areas where he has been hiding the number plates.

Police recovered 50 vehicle number plates from several places including Sonde, Seeta, Kyetume and Namuyenje among others.

"This is a big step.  We have so many cases registered of number plate thefts in Mukono police division and with this, we can crack down on the group that has been committing this crime," Sseguya told URN.

In his statement, the suspect says he has been hiding the number plates in different places where he would direct his victims to go and pick his after paying him a negotiable fee.

"When the victim calls asking for his or her number plate, I ask for about Shs 200,000. From there we bargain and I can reduce up to Shs 50,000," reads the statement in part.

This is not the first time that the same 17-year-old is arrested for stealing vehicle number plates.

In November 2017, he was arrested in Bweyogerere where it is alleged that he had stolen up to 17 number plates from people's compounds at night. He was detained at Bweyogerere police station but escaped from custody two days later.
