Uganda: Outrage from Israel over refugee repatriations

Israeli legislators and human rights activists have expressed outrage over the alleged shroud of secrecy being cast by the governments in Uganda and Rwanda over the deportation of refugees from Israel.Over 4000 refugees have been repatriated from Israel to Africa over the last four years in an alleged deal involve Kampala and Kigali.

Michal Rozin, a member of the Israeli parliament told journalists in Kampala over the weekend that Ugandan officials have shied away from meeting a delegation from Israel over the issue, citing the absence of a deal with Tel Aviv for the deportation of the refugees to the country and neighbouring Rwanda.

"We talked with the organistaions, we talked with people on the ground, we talked with members of parliament , they told us we know that people are deported from Israel and coming to Uganda and also in Israel we don't see the agreement because our government says its confidential" Rozin said.

A delegation from Israel comprising politicians and human rights activists is on a fact-finding mission to Uganda over the deportation of the refugees.

This follows a 90-day ultimatum by Israeli authorities in January to African asylum seekers to leave "for their homelands or third countroes" or face jail.

It was reported that Uganda and Rwanda were the countries to take in the refugees.

Media reports suggest that Uganda and Rwanda agreed to take in the immigrants in return for arms, military training and other aid from Israel.

However Uganda's Foreign Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem insists no such deal was reached.

There are some 27,000 Eritreans and 7,700 Sudanese in Israel who face imminent deportation.

Many of the migrants say they fled conflict and persecution and seek refugee status.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has appealed to Israel to halt its policy of relocating them to sub-Saharan Africa.
