British MP Seeks His Government's Intervention in Nambooze Affairs

BRITISH MP DR PAUL WILLIAMS

A British Member of Parliament, who lived and worked in Uganda before joining politics, has asked his government to intervene and secure the wellbeing of Mukono Municipality MP Hon Betty Nambooze.

The MP, Dr. Paul Williams yesterday Friday wrote to the British Foreign Affairs Minister Boris Johnson about the plight of Nambooze.

Nambooze is expected soon to be airlifted back to India for more treatment of her back which was broken during the 2017 Age Limit fracas in Parliament.

The Mukono MP was earlier this week released on Police Bond, from Kiruddu Hospital, where she was being guarded by armed police officers.

She was admitted there following her brutal arrest, for some posts on social media platforms, following the gruesome murder of Arua Municipality MP Hon Ibrahim Abiriga.

Dr Williams in his letter to the Foreign Minister said he had learnt about Nambooze's plight from a number of people including one Helen Epstain from Bard College in New York.

"I would be grateful if you would ensure that the government is making all appropriate diplomatic representations possible in order to secure the safety and wellbeing of Betty Nambooze," he wrote."

Dr Williams, who presents Stockton South in the British Parliament, is not the greatest fan of President Yoweri Museveni.

Recently in April while the President was in London for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the MP took to the floor of the house and demanded "Will the government use CHOGM to give a message to Uganda's President Museveni that after 32 years in power he's become a barrier to his country's development and that good governance includes leaving office?"

The 45 year old MP lived and worked in Uganda as a health worker.

For 5 years, Williams ran a health program in Kisoro district, involving the implementation of a community health insurance scheme.

This involved helping to set up a community hospital near the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which provided HIV, malaria and tuberculosis services.

Through the facility, Williams says he helped supply cheap mosquito nets and was able to trim the Malaria prevalence in the area.

Paul's team also started the first HIV/AIDS testing and treatment service in the area.
