Mixtape is a four-part musical journey through anthems, songs of yearning, of war, and of peace. Part I: "Hatikvah." There is one song that has accompanied Israel from the very start. It is sung at school ceremonies, state affairs, sports events, and military marches. But that song doesn't mention God, the Bible, or any triumph of modern Israeli history. Part II: "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav." This episode tells the story of the iconic song that built the musical careers of two modern-day Israeli prophets—one a prophet of hope and optimism, the other a prophet of gloom and despair. Part III: Eastward Bound. In a music scene dominated by Ashkenazi culture, Mizrahi singers had to patiently pave their way to the Israeli mainstream one song at a time. In this episode, we meet two Yemenite trailblazers, who took very different approaches to their heritage. Part IV: War, Peace, and Bumper Stickers. The series finale takes on two songs: a military band's hit that, in its afterlife, became an anthem for peace, and a rap tune penned by the country's leading novelist. | |
