Tumwebaze: Kayihura Detained in a House – Not a Cell

A lawyer to detained former police chief Gen Kale Kayihura has said the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) is unhappy with the media reports on his troubles.

Jet Tumwebaze of Kampala Associated Advocates (KAA), a firm representing Kayihura, has told local media that their client was "so disturbed by the falsehoods going on in the media".

Tumwebaze insisted that Kayihura was not under arrest.

"He is not under arrest as you the media are reporting," said Tumwebaze.

Eight days ago, Kayihura was picked from Kashagama, Lyantonde district.

A day earlier, the army had sent a helicopter to pick the general but he was not at Kashagama.

He had travelled to Mbarara, said defence spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire.

Kayihura had reportedly attempted to flee Uganda after learning of a plot to arrest him.

According to Tumwebaze, Kayihura has not been subjected to mistreatment.

"He is in a house in a military barracks. He has access to his family, lawyers, television and newspapers. He is not under arrest as you the media are reporting," said Tumwebaze.

Kayihura accuses the media of going ahead of the interrogators and the court process.

"The media has investigated, charged, convicted and sentenced Gen Kayihura before he could write one statement in his defense," claimed Tumwebaze.

He admitted that there was silence which the press exploited.

"Our silence was misinterpreted by the media to churn out to the public a lot of falsehoods," added Kayihura's lawyer.

"The media, especially mainstream media has been coming up with screaming headlines every day."

The press, continued Tumwebaze, had crafted numerous charges against Kayihura, and delivered judgement, contrary to journalism ethics.

"The media has charged Kale with about 21 counts already. They have tried him and passed their own judgement. This is breaking the profession. People are going to stop reading newspapers."
