{UAH} ANY NEED FOR A LEGAL PROFESSION IN UGANDA? NOT, SO ACCORDING TO MANY COMMENTATORS BECAUSE UGANDA IS A GANGSTER'S PARADISE WHERE THE RULE OF LAW IS ALIEN
UG Courts a chain of franchised flea markets!
It isn't worthy any longer, to go to law school, law college, and become a lawyer in M7's corrupted, tarnished pearl; where the law, and due process counts for nought; and justice commoditized.
Why should anyone go to law school, endeavour to acquire knowledge of the law, and lawyering skills, when one doesn't need that in practice, because money has replaced brilliant lawyers, magistrates and judges?
Why should anyone go to law school, when rulings, or whether to grant or deny a suspect bail, or grant cash or non-cash bail, are predetermined in the state attorney's , or the presiding magistrate's / judge's chamber, with the full acquiescence of advocates and defence lawyers, as if haggling over the price of goats and vegetables at their suburban markets?
Where is due process? Where is the law? Where is justice, if cases are not won on the floor of the courts; not by sheer force of arguments based on the facts of the case, applications of the law, and the sophistication and skillfulness, and force of character, and rhetorical skills of an adversary attorney, but the seductive rustles of crisp, new fifty-thousand shilling notes?
Who needs a well trained, knowledgeable, ethical, and conscientious lawyer; one steeped in the law; a purveyor of justice for clients, and a courtroom bully for justice, when court security, and court clerks, have become errand boys and errand girls, ladened with money bags for state attorneys, magistrates, and judges, who fix cases before the files are opened?
The NRA rebel bullets have struck at the soul of the fatherland; the rule of law, due process, and justice; the steely plinth and metal girders of open, democratic, just and fair society, is dead. The judiciary, bruised by the still birth of its twin brother, the legislature, is rotten at the core.
Why should anyone want to be a brilliant, skilled lawyer, when it is money that does the trick? Taxi touts and buspark hustlers, and street urchins, can do the job. Don't be fooled by gleaming, brass-plated name plagues adorning fancy entrances, at exclusive addresses, and pricey legal fees that go with it; your taxi conductor, or your househelp, could purchase justice for you, if only you Knew the phone number of the court clerk, court security, or that of the state attorney.
Why should anyone want to be a lawyer, when the temples of justice have become a chain of franchised flea markets, run by court clerks, state attorneys, magistrates, judges, and defence attorneys, hawking justice to the highest bidder, while the law society, and the law commission, speaking in monotonous voices like a scratched vinyl record, look the other way in trance, secluded in their routinized make-believe world, far removed from M7's Uganda.
