BUGIRI ELECTION: HOW BOBI WINE IS STEALING BESIGYE'S POLITICAL SHINE

Bobi Wine and Basalirwa

If there is anyone concerned about the rise of Bobi Wine's influence in the politics of Ugandan, it should be Dr Kizza Besigye-the man who has influenced opposition politics for as long as he broke ranks with President Museveni in the late 90s.

However, Dr Besigye's influence now seems to be waning with the emergency of the youthful singer turned politician.

Last night security forces raided the hotels in which Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine spent the night, an indication of a power shift in the opposition ranks. It is now clear that it is not about Besigye only.

Even though, Bobi Wine is not a candidate in the election, he seems to have influence especially among the young people.

It all started with the nomination of Asuman Basalirwa of Jeema when Bobi Wine escorted him and the two attracted a huge crowd. This was despite the FDC candidate Namatende who has the blessing of her FDC party and opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye.

Bobi Wine helped set the pace for Basalirwa's camp and since his nomination; he has had a sizeable crowd at his rallies.

Earlier today, Bobi Wine who is in Bugiri ahead of the election posted on his social media platforms that  his team members have been arrested after Police surrounded Planet Hotel where he is staying.

"My Hotel in Bugiri is now surrounded by the military, many of my team members are arrested," Bobi Wine wrote.

Mr Basalirwa also posted that his home and the hotel he was staying at had also been sorrounded.

"Heavily armed security personnel have surrounded my home and planet hotel where Bobi Wine and Hon Zake Mutebi are residing. They are currently forcing their way into the rooms," Mr Basalirwa posted.

It remains to be seen how Bobi Wine's influence will play out as he continues to extend his influence across the country.

Dr Besigye has largely been quiet in the Bugiri election.
