Iranian migrant stabs 6 people on German bus – Was his plan to burn the passengers alive?
In Lübeck, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, ten people were injured in a knife attack on a fully occupied bus. Among the injured is a man in a wheelchair. Three victims were seriously injured, German tabloid BILD reports.
According to the Interior Minister of the state, Hans-Joachim Grote, the suspect, a 34-year-old Iranian man, stabbed six people.
Bodo Z. 74, from Lübeck was on the bus. The former carpenter tells BILD:
"I wanted to play open-air chess to Travemünde. My companion and I sat in the back of the bus. I noticed the man because he was dressed too warm. He was wearing a shirt, a jumper and a coat with fur collar. Suddenly there was a commotion as the front of the bus filled up with smoke.
"Then the man ran to the back of the bus and stabbed a man in a wheelchair. He then started for my chess companion, seated in the corridor. He was stabbed in the shoulder. After that, there were screams as the passengers fled the bus. I also got off the bus and thought I should help. I took a branch and as two men were wrestling with the attacker, I hit him on the head. Then, it was quiet." Bodo Z. continued.
According to Attorney-General Dr. Ulla Hingst other passengers intervened and tried to overwhelm the attacker. She tells BILD: "The police were then able to take him into custody." He will be tried on the same day.
Hingst adds that there is "no indication of radicalisation in any form. The facts are still unclear".
The prosecutor later reported that the ordinance clearance service examined the attacker's backpack on the bus. In the bag a fire accelerator was found.
A fire accelerator or accelerant are popular among arsonists and can speed up the process of starting a fire. It makes fires produce more heat and causes it to spread quicker.
Was the attacker's plan to take out the bus driver prohibiting any others to escape, setting the bus alight? One of the passengers said he was dressed too warm, was the extra clothing to protect him from the fire?
Though speculating, the German police should really consider this scenario before terrorism of any form is completely ruled out.
