Tucker Carlson: Mexico has interfered in US elections 'more successfully' than Russia

Fox News host Tucker Carlson insisted on Monday that Mexico had been successful than Russia in influencing U.S. elections by "packing" the American electorate with its own people.

Speaking on the air, Carlson said that Russia has, in fact, sought to meddle in U.S. affairs. But other countries, like Mexico, had been more successful in doing so, he said.

"I don’t think Russia is our close friend or anything like that," Carlson said. "I think of course they try to interfere in our affairs. They have for a long time. Many countries do. Some more successfully than Russia, like Mexico, which is routinely interfering in our elections by packing our electorate."

Carlson's comment echoes a claim by some conservatives that immigrants from Mexico have long been voting illegally in U.S. elections and that such fraudulent voting has compromised the reliability to American elections.

President Trump, for example, has claimed that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election and that he would have won the popular vote had it not been for such illicit ballots. 

That notion has been widely debunked. Trump won the electoral vote in 2016, but ultimately received nearly 3 million fewer votes than his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in the popular contest.

Carlson's remarks came after Trump cast doubt on the U.S. intelligence community's determination that Russia meddled in the 2016 election during a joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. 

"They said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin — he just said it’s not Russia," Trump said, adding that he does not "see any reason why it would be" Russia.
