Mysterious Circumstances Surround The Death Of Local Teacher Visiting Uganda

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – An online petition drive is underway to name a San Antonio Independent School District building after a teacher who died in Uganda last week.

William Davis worked at Rhodes Middle School for 23 years where he taught Tech Apps, Video Production and Web Design. The graduate of Purdue University was a world traveler and took students on trips to Washington, D.C., New York City, Gettysburg and California.

Davis was killed in a traffic accident Tuesday in Uganda while driving to Ssese Islands, but a local report says the circumstances are under investigation. Police in Masaka District say Davis was last seen dining at a restaurant with three people who later dropped off his body at a hospital and vanished.

A statement on the San Antonio School District's Facebook page says," We are deeply saddened by the news that Rhodes MS teacher William Davis died in Uganda in an accident. He and his passion for education will be greatly missed."

Davis and the rest of the Rhodes technology team were honored last fall at the SAISD Foundation's Inspire Awards for their innovation. He also was active in the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel.

"Our Alliance family is completely devastated by the news that our beloved Bill Davis has passed away in an accident in Uganda. Bill was a passionate teacher at Rhodes MS, a devoted father, a proud union activist, and an all-around amazing human being. William Davis, rest in power, rest in peace. We love you and will miss you so very much. All of us send our thoughts and prayers to Bill's family and friends," the group stated in a Facebook post.

The petition drive seeks to  rename the technology building at Rhodes the "William E. Davis Technology Building."

Bill's brother, Terry Davis has started a GoFundMe account to help raise money to get Bill's body back home.

"We are still waiting on the police report for details. In the meantime, we want to have his remains shipped to Texas per his daughter's request," said Terry Davis.

He says any remaining funds will be used for a funeral service in Lafayette, Indiana and in San Antonio. The remaining money will go to his two young daughters. Davis was divorced.
