Ruhakana Rugunda: Provocation Could Drag Uganda To Dark Days Of Instability

Rugunda Reminds Sheema of Obote-Bazilio Okello Fallout

Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has warned that cliques within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the broader Ugandan society could plunge the country into instability.

Campaigning for science and technology minister Dr Elioda Tumwesigye, the NRM candidate in Sheema Municipality elections, Rugunda reminded the party's supporters of the consequences of divisions in the past governments.

"Don't you know what happened when President Milton Obote started disagreeing with-, provoking and pointing fingers at Bazilio Okello?" Rugunda reminded NRM supporters in Sheema Municipality.

Lt Gen Bazilio Olara-Okello commanded the mutiny against Obote's second regime on July 27, 1985.

"Provocations, insults and abuses and clashes, are things which cause instability and put an end to peace," said Rugunda.

"So as the people of Sheema, who have always been united, use this election to send a message to the entire Uganda that you are so much united."

Tumwesigye, also Sheema North MP, is facing competition from opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Virginia Plan Mugyenyi, among other candidates.
