{UAH} Amnesty International calls in investigators after second staff suicide

Frank Mujabi/ Akim Odong/ Afuwa/ Mayimuna,

Here is the heavy cost of working for Amnesty International. I think I got out at the right time. It is not possible to remain sane when your daily work is researching and documenting some of the most gruesome and barbaric acts of cruelty human beings can inflict on each other. I think it is a  job one can do for maybe 5 years and then get out- otherwise the potential to loose one's  sanity is quite high. I am glad the oganisation is beginning to look into the pressures that its workers face, trying to keep the candle of humanity burning, amidst a raging sea of cynicism and indifference. And it does not help that the organisation is constantly attacked, even by those who should know better.

Amnesty International calls in investigators after second staff suicide

Roz McGregor worked as a paid intern for Amnesty in Geneva, where she developed anxiety and insomnia

Amnesty International is calling in external investigators to examine two staff suicides that have caused an internal crisis at the world's best-known human rights organisation.

Roz McGregor, 28, an Amnesty intern from Leatherhead, Surrey, took her own life five weeks after Gaetan Mootoo, 65, a veteran researcher, ended his at the organisation's Paris offices. Both worked for Amnesty's international secretariat, which is based in Clerkenwell, London.

Mr Mootoo left a note in which he complained of heavy work pressure and a lack of support from management. Ms McGregor's family have expressed concerns that Amnesty failed to respond adequately when she developed "acute anxiety" during her five months at its Geneva office.

A senior QC has been commissioned to conduct a review of Mr Mootoo's death…
