The Office of the President in Botswana has instructed the Debswana Diamond Company not to offer former President Ian Khama a ride on the mining company's jet, local media reported on Wednesday.Khama who vacated the presidency last April was scheduled to attend an event on Thursday in the Orapa/Letlhakane area in western Botswana where Debswana mines are located.
Debswana is a 50/50 venture between De Beers and the Botswana government.
Khama made the request to the company because its private jet flies between the capital Gaborone and Orapa town every Monday and Wednesday.
According to the Botswana Gazette newspaper, Debswana's Managing Director Balisi Bonyongo broke the humiliating news to Khama that he had received an instruction from the Permanent Secretary to the President Carter Morupisi barring it from allowing Khama to fly on their jet.
Morupisi confirmed that the Office of the President was mandated with handling travelling arrangements for former Presidents and as such they cannot allow Khama to "go around asking for free rides from companies."
Morupisi added that Khama is aware of this procedure and he should have done the right thing.
Three months ago Masisi's administration also barred Khama from flying army aircraft.
Former Director of Directorate of Security Intelligence (DIS) Isaac Kgosi defied Masisi and lent Khama the directorate's jet.
Masisi then fired Kgosi "with immediate effect."
