{UAH} Discussing Refugees in Uganda - 2018 UNAA Seattle Convention

The Political Forum

at the

30th Annual UNAA Convention

Seattle, WA

Sunday September 2, 2018

Uganda is home to more than 1 million refugees from South Sudan and an estimated 300,000 more from other nearby countries like Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.  With an estimated 1/3 (roughly 12 million) of its own citizens living at or below the international poverty line, how can the country sustain this continued influx of refugees?

In 2007, Uganda led a multinational military effort in Somalia in an effort to end the ongoing civil war and still maintains a significant military presence there to this day.

It is reported that the Uganda military has conducted operations in South Sudan in recent years in an effort to help end the ongoing civil war in that country too.

There is every reason to believe that Uganda’s various military operations in neighboring countries are intended to help bring about political stability in the region and in so doing stem the continued influx of refugees from these war-torn regions.

So there are several questions here.

1.     Why does Uganda so freely accept this influx of refugees when 1/3 of its own citizens live at or below the poverty line?

2.     What are the social and financial impacts of this policy on the country and its people?

3.     Is it right for Uganda to so actively engage in military operations in war-torn neighboring countries?

4.     Have these military operations achieved any measurable levels of success?

Join us this coming Labor Day weekend as we ask visiting politicians from Uganda to address this, and other, very contentious issues during the Political Forum at the 30th Annual  UNAA Convention in Seattle.
