FDC Can Lose Leadership In Parliament – MP Okupa Hints At Formation Of A New Party With The Sacking Of Muntu Supporters

As the dust raised by the new changes in the minority leadership in parliament continues to settle, Kasiro County MP Elijah Okupa has warned Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) bosses.

Eng. Patrick Amuriat Oboi, the president of Uganda's leading opposition party in parliament made changes that raised many eyebrows in the Country when he dropped most leaders who supported his opponent Mugisha Muntu in the last party presidential elections.

These changes did not spare the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Winnie Kiiza as well as other vibrant committee Chairpersons such as Abdu Katuntu and Angelina Osege.

While addressing the media, Okupa who accompanied Kiiza noted that just in case such changes were made in bad spirit, the FDC party is bound to lose its credibility as a leading opposition party in the country.

"Assuming the changes are true and were based on kicking out those that supported Gen. Mugisha Muntu in the recent party presidential elections; I just want to send a caution on whoever is doing that that it would be a dangerous step taken," Okupa said.

Okupa reminded FDC that the constitution was recently amended to give people permission to cross to another party in the last one year of their term in Parliament without losing their seat.

He schooled them that assuming that happens, FDC risks losing the prestige of having a minority party leader in Parliament because out of the 37 MP, there were only 8 who supported Amuriat.

"Assuming within that one year, the remaining members formed a new party, they would be the majority because they would be 25 and what will FDC remain with! They would be a minority and there would be another leader of opposition automatically. So, they must think about that as well because these are things which shall happen," Okupa added.

However, Patrick Amuriat told NBS TV morning Breeze presenter Kaggwa Njala that he has never been vindictive. "I have never been vindictive in my life and would never be. If I was, then Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda would not have retained his position as chief opposition whip. These changes were informed by a number of factors like loyalty, financial contribution, other details underground are not for public consumption. Changes in parliament happen, they are inevitable. I don't actually understand why this has raised eyebrows, opportunity should be given to as many people as possible," the FDC boss said.
