Murithi: "All what you are saying is what is wrong with the government, you are not providing alternative leadership as Cord. You are not saying this is wrong. This is how it should be done."

Kalonzo Musyoka: "You know young man; you are entitled to asking, first of all I didn't even get your name."

Murithi: "My name is Kennedy Murithi from Nation Media Group."

Kalonzo Musyoka: Thank you Murithi, that name betrays it all, I have nothing else to say. Absolutely, I have nothing to say."

Later, the reporter confronted the former VP to ask why he responded the way he did to which he said: "I am sorry if I am wrong. We can do this over tea."

FAST FORWARD TO WEDNESDAY AUGUST 29, 2018

Kalonzo shamefully betrayed his Kamba name by rushing to the Milimani law courts today to defend embattled Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu, a fellow Kamba, arrested yesterday and charged with graft.

Never again can Kalonzo ever stand up at a public rally and declare he is a nationalist in the forefront of the war on corruption.

It was below his national status as a Kenyan leader to have gone to court and attend the case of, not one of his party members, but the second ranking member of the Judiciary.

It was even worse that he not only attended the court proceedings but took part in them as a lawyer defending Mwilu.

All not in the name of justice - because Kenya has thousands of lawyers to fight for justice - but in the name of his tribe.

In doing so, he not only compromised his nationalist credentials but exposed to the world that Mwilu was politically aligned to the opposition which was why she took part in the vote to nullify the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta on September 1.

That the Opposition NASA was in court today to stand by Mwilu for her vote last September is evident from the fact that 13 political lawyers, as opposed to apolitical ones, were in court to represent Mwilu - all of them Nasa. Nasa's army of political lawyers never rushes to court except when one of their own is in the dock.

Senior Counsel James Orengo again did it. He did not see it fit to leave it to Mwilu's lawyer to defend her. Instead he took over to lead the charge in court demanding a stoppage of the prosecution of Mwilu claiming the prosecution charges were defective.

He too is one of those that proclaim from the rooftops that he is committed to the war on graft. Only the other day, as Senator-Lawyer, James Orengo was in a Busia court defending ODM Governor Sospeter Ojaamong against graft charges.

What a contradiction in terms. Orengo as senator is supposed to oversee governors and make sure they dont steal public money.

Orengo is practising a weird brand of the law.

Just like our economists at The Treasury who only know the way to cover a budget deficit is to raises taxes not cut back on expenditures.

James Orengo has two sets of laws he practises. One for defending his side, the other for use against the other side.

But he has boxed Raila into a tight corner now. For Raila has been very vocal that the war on graft was as a result of The Handshake.

But his leading ally is doing his best to unravel it, by batting for those accused of corruption.

We ask Orengo: Why dont you leave it to the courts to decide whether the matter facing Mwilu is civil or criminal?

Why dont you let the court determine whether the charges against Mwilu are defective or not ? And lastly why dont you let it be determined by the court, the sole arbiter not you, if she is guilty or not ?

Why is Orengo so determined to stop the case from taking place ? What is Mwilu afraid of ?

In the final analysis, Orengo's stance today effectively means he and his colleagues can no longer legitimately demand for graft prosecution of their arch-targets on the other side.

They have lost the moral justification to demand such action by seeking to block the prosecution of their own, and whether they deny it or not, that action amounts to a cover-up.
