Stella Nyanzi

When I heard of the brutal violence that the police unleashed in Mityana to disperse demonstrators, resulting into untold deaths and innumerable wounded men, women, and children, I decided to take my children to Rubaga Hospital to visit Hon Zaake Francis Butebi. I wanted them to witness what violent abuse dictator Museveni is unleashing on Ugandans.

I explained to Baraka, Wasswa and Kato about the beatings that Hon. Zaake received to his head when the SFC attacked the house of Parliament and forced Gikwateko onto Uganda. I explained to them how the SFC brutalised his body when he was arrested alongside Bobi Wine and the other detainees. I explained to my children how the armed goons then dumped his swollen wounded body in a public path. I told them to come and witness how dictators torture and torment the bodies of legislators. My children said it was much worse than a horror film.

And Hon. Zaake received my children hospitably although he was visibly in pain. He insisted on holding their hands and calling out each of their names. He grimaced with pain as he asked them to study hard at school. He told them to make me as proud as he made his mother by excelling at whatever they did. As he talked to my children about his mother, he smiled with pride. I froze that memory in a picture. He smiled about his mother's love.

In that moment, I wondered why mothers in Uganda are staying out of the peaceful demonstrations against the abuse of human rights of fellow Ugandans. Zaake has a mother. She silently sat by her son's bed as he engaged his adult, youthful and younger visitors. I wondered what damage I would do if my Kato or Wasswa were beaten into pulp by state operatives! I wondered what prayers I would pray if my sons' manhood was crashed by weapon-swinging men. I wondered how many years I would cry if any of my children were beaten up and left for dead in a public path.

Why aren't Ugandan mothers enraged by the violence of dictator Museveni's gun-boys?

Hon. Zaake has a mother! Hon. Bobi Wine has a mother! Hon. Gerald Karuhanga has a mother! The Arua-34 have mothers! Yasin Kawuma has a mother! The murdered people of Mityana have mothers. The wounded in Mityana have mothers. Many mothers are in pain about their tortured and murdered children. Why aren't you joining us to peacefully protest against the brutes murdering and maiming our children? Do you think that Zaake's mother is unique from you? Tomorrow, will be your own child! Come and resist the state brutality and violence. Tomorrow will be your own child sleeping in Hon. Zaake's bed.
