Murder Suspect Who Killed Black Man Says the Bible Is "For White People"

This past March, 53-year-old John Daniel Carothers set fire to a VA Assistant Living facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, killing one person.

In addition to charges of reckless endangerment and aggravated arson, investigators eventually charged Carothers, who also lived in that building, with first-degree murder. They said the fire was confined to one room, and that was no accident because Carothers wanted to kill the man inside, an African-American named Robert Miller.

In fact, according to District Attorney Jennings Jones, Carothers "poured an accelerant onto the victim and ignited it."

Somehow this story just got even worse.

Investigators are now saying they intercepted a letter Carothers wrote from his prison cell to a white supremacist group admitting his guilt and saying he did it because "the Bible is about white people and for white people."

"To my brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ our savior and Lord, My name is John D. Carothers and I believe the Bible is about white people and for white people. I am in Rutherford County jail for burning a black man. I set him on fire with lighter fluid poured on his head," states the handwritten letter intercepted at the jail by the sheriff's office. It also asks people to send him a study Bible.

He killed someone… but he needs a Bible to remind himself not to kill people? I don't get it. (Also, what color does he think Middle Eastern Jesus was…?)

A cook at the home said she never detected any racism from Carothers, adding that Miller told her (after he was burned but before he died) that the two man had a conflict "back in the day." Though they were only living in the home simultaneously for three months.

Carothers was found mentally competent enough to stand trial. If he's found guilty, prosecutors may try to use the letter to argue this was a hate crime, deserving of a longer sentence.
