Officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday, August 20, arrested a Nairobi-based businessman for allegedly attempting to bribe Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

The businessman identified as Praful Kumar, was seeking for the approval of Grand Monar Hotel in Gigiri, Nairobi, which is under construction when he offered Sonko a bribe of KSh 1 million.

TUKO.co.ke understands the Nairobi County government had on August 16, 2018, stopped the construction of the hotel.

EACC South region boss George Ojowi said Kumar was arrested in Kanamai, Kilifi County while seeking approval for the hotel.

The businessman will be arraigned in court on Wednesday, August, 22, to answer to corruption charges.

His arrest came barely days after Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's wife Susan Wangare was arrested alongside 14 others for allegedly constructing buildings without observing set laws.

Waititu was later recorded in a phone conversation pleading with Sonko to release his wife who had been arrested by Nairobi City county officials.

The national government in collaboration with the county government has embarked on a demolition spree targeting buildings erected on public and wetland land.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on August 12, 2018, warned the demolition exercise would not spare anyone, regardless of who they are in the society.
"No matter how much money you have, no matter how many people in high offices you know, we will not be prevented from achieving our dreams because of impunity," he said.
