Esther Akello, a 36-year nurse in Bududa hospital collapsed and died over bleeding after the ambulance driver said he only had instructions to drive referral cases to Mbale hospital. Esther's case was not among the ones referred to.
The incident has sparked off confusion at the hospital causing fear for the hospital administration since Akello's colleagues want action taken against the driver.
Bududa Hospital serves over 500,000 people from the Bududa, Manafwa, Namisidwa and some parts of western Kenya.

The late Akello who was a nurse in the female ward at the hospital died as a result of negligence by the hospital administration who neighbors contacted when she collapsed. The hospital administration reportedly ignored the residents claiming that the ambulance didnt have fuel.
John Baptist Nambeshe the Manjiya Member of Parliament who is also a former district chairperson says that the behavior of most health workers in Bududa district is intolerable and complacent.
Dr. John Baptist Wanyaye, the Commissioner Ambulance Services at the Ministry of Health said that ideally ambulance service is supposed to be free to the patients.
