Fw: {UAH} Kenya's former sports minister, 5 others accused of corruption

Bobby;

Much as: "We must never forget our sportsmen."....... the law is an ass and applies to all and is supposed to be seen to apply in equal measure from my lay perspective. In the event he is guilty, then the sentence can be reduced significantly due to his past good behaviour and his immense contribution to the country's image. Or on suspended jail sentence! To leave him go scot-free is to continue supporting impunity especially to those persons ranking high in society! All said; that is "IF" he is found guilty. If found guilty let him pay back and he be forgiven and not serve his sentence in jail!

The Kenyan team performed abysmally at the Rio Olympics due to mismanagement/abuse of office/fraudulent activities. Delayed arrival, and in less than 3-5hrs from long travel, athletes had to hit the tracking, others shared rooms, some rooms are rumoured to have been paid for and yet they were not! Of all the people in sports management, Kipchoge Keino should have known better of preparations and logistics involved in good performance!

For example: KQ quoted to Nation Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) as follows: Economy return ticket shs:175,000 instead NOCK shs;445,381 and for Business KQ quoted shs:800,000 yet NOCK went for shs:2,028,385 from a local ticketing agent that translated to overkill of about 254%!!!!!

The money that NIKE pays for medals at the Olympics did not trickle down to those who won the medals........!!!!

State House (JP) stopped/interfered on this case from proceeding at around December 2016 due to the 2017 elections as some of those involved were arraigned in court with a good amount of evidence, some recovered from their houses and offices/businesses! Right now the JP from RV Mpigs have started to call for leaving Kip Keino out of this and others......... why?

Edmund,

This corruption merry go round in Kenya has caught up with the great Kipchoge Keino as well. But why can' t they treat the man with the dignity that he deserves- a decent pension. Kipchoge is one of the greatest Kenyans- in fact Africans - of all time. It breaks my heart to see him humiliated in such a manner. We must never forget our sportsmen. They are the only ones who have put Africa on the world map- all other Africans in almost every single profession- have failed to make Africa proud-

Kenya's former sports minister will be charged in court in relation to the siphoning of funds meant for athletes who competed in the Olympics in Brazil two years ago, the chief prosecutor said on Saturday (October 13).

The East African nation enjoyed its most successful Olympics in Rio, winning six gold medals, six silvers and one bronze, all in track and field, but the performance was blighted by claims of corruption among senior government officials and team bosses.

An investigation had laid the blame on Hassan Wario, the sports minister at the time, and five other former senior officials. They will be charged with 10 counts of abuse of office and failure to comply with the law, said Noordin Haji, the chief prosecutor.

Wario, who was appointed Kenya's ambassador to Austria this year, was not immediately available for comment. The other five ex-officials, including Kipchoge Keino, who headed the national Olympics committee, were also not immediately available.

"The impact of corruption and siphoning of funds meant for the facilitation of our sportsmen and women has a negative impact on their ability to perform optimally," Haji said in a statement.

Wario and others will be charged in relation to the loss of a total of more than 55 million shillings ($545,905), Haji said.

Dozens of senior government officials and business people are facing various charges related to corruption, part of a fresh attempt by President Uhuru Kenyatta since May to crack down on widespread graft.

Critics have accused Kenyatta of failing to deal with corruption during his first term which ended last year, despite promises to do so when he was first elected in 2013.
