Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said today that the Senate will vote on Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination this week, even as the FBI continues its inquiry into sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh. Meanwhile, a Yale classmate released a statement that said Kavanaugh was "belligerent and aggressive" when he drank. Kavanaugh's Senate testimony has raised questions about what his behavior was like when drunk in high school and college.  The desperate search for survivors in Indonesia continues after last week's deadly earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 1,200 people.   First lady Melania Trump arrived today in Accra, Ghana, the first stop of a multi-day trip that includes visits to Malawi, Kenya and Egypt. Two NPR contributors from Ghana and Kenya have advice for the first lady during her first solo trip abroad. Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. One survivor of the Las Vegas massacre spoke to NPR's Eric Westervelt about helping other survivors to process the horror of the day 58 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded physically and mentally.

Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland have won this year's Nobel Prize in physics for laser work. Strickland is the third woman to have won the physics prize. The previous two winners were Maria Goeppert Mayer for nuclear physics in 1963, and Marie Curie in 1903 for her studies of radiation. Beginning Nov. 1, Amazon will pay all U.S. employees a minimum of $15 an hour, which will affect 250,000 current employees and 100,000 seasonal employees.
