{UAH} Pakistan court clears condemned Christian
Today is a red letter day. Just a few hours ago, the Pakistan Supreme Court finally cleared the Pakistan mother Asia Bibi of the conviction for the crime of blasphemy and ordered her immediate release. Asia Bibi has been on the death row for over 10 years now for having asked another muslim woman in a quarrel.:
"What did your Prophet Mohammed ever do to save mankind?"
For asking the above rhetorical question, she was convicted of blasphemy by a kangaroo sharia court and sentenced to death.
Since then, tens of thousands of people all around the world have waged a campaign to save Asia Bibi. Asia Bibi has become the icon for human rights and the persecution that Christians suffer in muslim countries. What made her appeal so riveting was her determination to die, need be, for her Christian faith as she completely rejected the idea that Islam saved her or anyone else.
This is the first time that Roman Catholic Pope Francis has openly stood up to defend a member of his flock ever since he ascended the papacy on 13/3/2013. Millions of Catholics and indeed the entire Christian congregation had became increasingly frustrated and disappointed with him for his refusal to openly stand up for Christians being persecuted in muslim countries. Thousands of Christians have been killed in countries like Iraq, Egypt and the wider Arab muslim world without the Pope lifting a finger to help them. He is the global figure for Christianity and so much hope is put on him to stand up to the genocide that too often members of his own church are subjected to in muslim countries. But is quiet diplomace ha proved very disaapointing as thousands upon thousands of Christians faced gruesome persecution, and have ebbn virtually wiped out in Iraq, where they numberred 400,000 before the overthrow of Saddam Huseein, but their numbers have now dropped to a catastrophic 40,000 as a result of genocide or forced migration.
On this occasion we salute Pope Francis for drawing a RED LINE for the Pakistani authorities. He told them the world wide Catholic Community would not stand aside and allow an innocent woman to be beheaded, that relations between the Catholic community and Muslims would break down irreparably if Asia Bibi was murdered. He asked them to free Asia Bibi immediately as he considered her to be under captivity. He now needs to do the same for the Nigerian teenager Leah Sharibu, who is also being held in captivity by Muslim barbarians and is threatened with beheading. The question Pope Francis has keep uppermost in his mind is this: - if he can not stand up for 15 year old Leah Sharibu, then who else can do so?
This is the longest campaign by far I have engaged in- lasting 10 years. We hope and pray Asia Bibi is finally released from captivity. It is clear she can no longer live in Pakistan but there are many countries, including Scotland, that have offered her and her family asylum on the basis of religious persecution.
I will post more information on this sombre news as I get it, but it is certainly the greatest good event to come out of Pakistan in the last 20 years. There is nothing to celebrate about it. But there is everything to condemn about the barbarity of the Pakistan religious-judicial system, and the intolerance and outright persecution it's kangaroo sharia courts subject innocent people to. It shows good will always triumph over evil. And it demonstrates why we must never give up even when all the odds are stuck against us.
As for me personally, I will always hear the cries, wipe the tears off the faces, and hold the hands of those like Asia Bibi and Leah Sharibu who are completely helpless and can not speak for themselves. I will always extend a hand to those who are drowning and I will never abandon anyone to their own fate if I can help it.
