{UAH} Paulo Ssemogerere collapses in church

Former DP president, and a Ugandan nationalist, Paulo Kawanga Ssemogerere is recuperating at a Kampala hospital after collapsing at church earlier today.

Though I did not support him, when he ran for the presidency in 1980, I gradually came to appreciate Dr. Ssemo as a peace-maker, and a Ugandan who had our country at hear. 

Dr. Ssemo seemed deeply conflicted on the way forward for the country. Being a democrat and Leader of the Opposition, he worked closed with President Obote, and often lunched with him, as they discussed issues of national importance.

But Ssemo  did not have a clear path on how to bring the radical militants within his party, Fedemo, or from the larger Ganda tribe, UFM, to work with the UPC government. His meetings with these fighter groups led national spies to conclude that Ssemo was secretly working with the rebels to sabotage the government.

Francis Wazarahi Bwengye, the former DP Secretary General, once told me in Nairobi in the late 1980's, that Dr. Ssemo's major weakness as a leader, was his disposition to appeal to all sides, without offending anyone.

That depth of civility rare works, even in non-political environments, like religious organizations.
