Field Marshall John Okello was a peasant turned revolutionary, and one of the greatest heroes of pre-colonial Africa. John Okello liberated Zanzibar from brutal Arab colonial oppression and put an end to the slave trade that had devastated much of Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.
