Remembering President Samora
By This Is Africa on October 19, 2016 — On this day Africa lost one of its most celebrated liberation heroes, a fighter and revolutionary leader, Mozambican President Samora Machel who perished in a fatal plane crash in 1986. Today we join Mozambique to commemorate the legacies of President Samora and pay homage to this African hero.
Africa lost one of its most celebrated liberation heroes, an anti-colonial stalwart and revolutionary leader, Mozambican President Samora Machel who perished in a fatal plane crash in 1986. On the day of the crash President Samora was returning from an African leaders' summit in Zambia and he perished with 33 other passengers, when their Tupolev 134 plane crashed into the Lebombo mountains, near Mbuzini in South Africa.
Machel served as the first President of #Mozambique from the country's independence in 1975 until his death. Affectionately referred to as "President Samora", Machel dedicated his life to fighting colonialism, exploitation and injustices.
A Socialism and Pan-Africanism proponent, Machel is undoubtedly one of Africa's foremost freedom fighters, and nationalists, who later influenced a generation of #PanAfrican nationalists and freedom fighters.
Machel was born in the village of Madragoa, in the Gaza Province. Machel became politically conscious while training as nurse and became politically active in the early years of his nursing career.
He later left the hospital where he was working and joined the Mozambican nationalist struggle in neighbouring Tanzania. Machel was involved in the armed struggle for independence and rose to become a key commander of #FRELIMO. Machel later became the head of the army after the death of its first commander, and led the liberation movement until independence in 1975.
He led the independent country until his death in a plane crash in 1986. We celebrate the legacy of one of Mozambique's founding heroes.
