SOROTI. A Local Council chairperson in Soroti District has been arrested for allegedly stealing knickers of a 14-year-old girl from a bathroom where it had been hung to dry.
The suspect, Mr Michael Ogaram, the Local Council I chairman for Akisim Cell II in Soroti Municipality, was arrested by police on Wednesday after a raid on his home by the girl's parents and the residents.
Mr Stephen Ojok, the officer-in-charge of Soroti Central Police Station, said they were still investigating the matter, but added that they would also investigate whether the suspect had sex with the juvenile.
"I left the knickers last night to dry. Today when I entered the bathroom, it was there and dry. But after showering, when I turned to put it on, it was not there," the school girl narrated.
Mr Joseph Ochom, the girl's father, said his daughter told him that she had seen Mr Ogaram near the bathroom as she bathed before the knickers disappeared. The residents suspected the chairperson.
Mr Ochom said they raided Mr Ogaram's house but he refused to surrender the knickers. However, he later yielded and the residents recovered the knickers from the house.
The presidential adviser on Teso Affairs, Ms Teddy Acham, said the arrest was meant to tarnish the man's name because he is a member of the NRM party.
By the time of filing this story, Mr Ogaram was till in police custody. The motive of taking the knickers was not readily established.
