Nov. 27, 2018 WHAT TO KNOW NOW By Lisa Cornish![]()
Following last week's #GlobalDevWomen series, which explored how to bridge the gender gap and further women's leadership, International Civil Society Action Network head Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini discusses why women are critical to the peace process.
ICAN, which Naraghi-Anderlini calls a "curated network," helps identify and bring together women at the local level to engage both sides of a conflict. While the challenges women face may be unique to their circumstances, Naraghi-Anderlini said, bringing these women together helps build creative solutions.
Photo by: ACFID "How do you work with the police? … How do you work with legislators? These women teach each other and it's fascinating to see simple tactics that they might use," she said.
To build peace within countries and communities, the issues discussed need to be localized with the jargon removed. Through these networks, women can discuss what works best in communicating why it is important and what to think about.
"There's no point in going and telling a man that women's rights are important," Naraghi-Anderlini said. "First of all, the terminology gets mistranslated along the way. But, if you ask whether daughters should go to school, whether daughters should be safe when they are married, and what Islam says about treating girls, you can open up conversation. In each context, it's going to be slightly different and nuanced."
For many women peacemakers, their work is invisible and behind the scenes. If they are engaging with terrorists to stop a conflict, this is not something that can be promoted. The invisibility of the work is a challenge. Read more on what support is required.
To mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women last Sunday, Devex heard from journalists in four hubs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to learn about the impact of #MeToo. Read more here.
QUOTABLE "All you really need to do is reflect what the science says is happening. It doesn't need any embellishment — climate scientists are quite cautious. They have a conservative process and deliver predictions at a lower end of impact. Despite this, those results are still deeply disturbing."

Photo by: Tim Jokl / CC BY-NC Tenders for many EU aid projects require organizations to be based in the EU, or in a country that has a special arrangement with it, meaning the eligibility of U.K.-based organizations after Brexit remains in doubt. Devex speaks to NGOs that have registered or are considering registering in the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, or Germany in order to maintain access to EU funding, including Mercy Corps, Opportunity International, and DAI.
Read more from our series exploring the impact of Brexit on aid, including what's at stake for aid; whether the U.K. could continue contributing to EU aid projects; and the war of words over U.K. organizations' access to EU funding.![]()
SPONSORED ANNOUNCEMENT In Ethiopia, a country with one of the fastest growing urban populations, smallholder farmers play a vital role in feeding the cities. But they need help eliminating pests and weeds to ensure a healthy harvest. CropLife International explains how this can be done.
"We sell our produce to people in the cities, so we are interdependent with them," Obese Gelgalu, a smallholder horticultural farmer in Ziway explained to CropLife International. She plays an important role in feeding the cities harvesting a variety of vegetables, including cabbages, green beans, onions, and chilies. But like many other farmers, Gelgalu struggles to protect her crop from weed and pest problems, which can lead to low yields.
Read the full story here or visit the project website to hear more from Gelgalu, project partners, and farmers.
SPONSORED ANNOUNCEMENT "Stories moved me, but data changed me," said a gender advocate from the Equal Measures 2030's (EM2030) 2018 Advocates Survey. EM2030 connects data and evidence with advocacy and action. We aim for gender equality — backed by robust data — and a world where every girl and woman counts and is counted. Fifty-eight percent of gender advocates surveyed by EM2030 and Ipsos MORI this year marked gender-based violence as a top 3 gender equality priority issue. As we enter this year's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, it is critical that advocates have the data and evidence they need to drive accountability on gender equality.
Explore EM2030's new SDG Gender Index: a tool by and for advocates, that aims to tell the story of progress for girls and women. The index, housed on a digital Gender Advocates Data Hub, showcases stories, tools, and resources to provide a holistic way to measure and understand gender equality. Explore now.
