GUN FIRE AND TEAR GAS ROCK LIRA TOWN AS RESIDENTS TARGET Indian COMMUNITY
Gun fire and teargas rented the afternoon air in Lira town following confrontation between security forces and the locals. This after reports trickled in that police had shot and injured a mourner in Alito, Kole district during the emotional send off of 11 year old Dickens Okello, a primary Three pupil of Alito Primary school who was buried some hours ago. Okello who was allegedly killed by the Indians.
There is heavy police and military deployment in nearly all the streets of Lira especially on Lira Main Street where a techno mobile shop owned by an Indian has been broken into and heavily looted.
"This shop on Lira Main Street has been broken into by a mob, they found two female attendants and a male one but robbed all the smart phones on display and one laptop" Qfm's innocent Okello said on phone.
There is also heavy presence of both the military and the police on Lira Main Street which has also been cordoned off and movements have restricted. The police are also aiding Asian nationals to leave their
shops.
Most of them had locked themselves inside their shops for fear of attacks by the local people who are angered by the alleged killing of the 11 year old.
Meanwhile, Alito sub-county in Kole district was engulfed with gun smokes after mourners turned rowdy at Police and district leaders.
This follows a decision by the 'family members' of slain child denying top
security chiefs from addressing them [mourners].
Immediately, after being denied chances to make statements or perhaps eulogies, North Kyoga Region RPC, Kole DPC, Mohamed Musahakana and their men started exiting the funeral grounds, when shortly, locals started throwing stones directly at them, some hitting
their targets. Police, who were deployed there, started firing live bullets to quell the tense situation.
